Each Way Betting Explained
An each way bet is essentially
two separate bets on the same selection:
1.
Win bet - your selection must win outright
2.
Place bet - your selection must finish in a specified placing (usually top 2-4 positions)
How it works:
- You stake twice your intended amount (e.g., £5 each way = £10 total)
- If your selection wins, both bets pay out
- If your selection only places, you get paid at reduced odds (typically 1/4 or 1/5 of the win odds)
Example:
£10 each way on a horse at 10/1 odds (1/4 place terms, top 3 places):
- If it wins: Win bet pays £100 + Place bet pays £25 = £125 profit
- If it places 2nd/3rd: Only place bet pays £25, lose £35 overall
- If it finishes 4th or lower: Lose entire £20 stake
Common in:
- Horse racing (most popular)
- Football outright markets (top scorer, relegation)
Place terms vary by:
All major UK bookmakers offer each way betting, including
Bet365,
William Hill,
Ladbrokes,
Paddy Power, and
Sky Bet. Check their individual terms as place payouts can vary between operators.
Each way betting reduces risk while maintaining upside potential, making it popular for longshot selections.
