What Does "Each Way" Mean in Betting?
An
each way bet is essentially two separate bets combined into one wager. You're betting on a selection to:
1.
Win (the "win" part)
2.
Place (finish in a specified position, typically 2nd, 3rd, or sometimes 4th)
How It Works
- Your stake is doubled (half goes on the win, half on the place)
- If your selection wins, both parts pay out
- If your selection only places, you get paid at reduced odds (usually 1/4 or 1/5 of the win odds)
Example
- £10 each way on a horse at 10/1 odds
- Total stake: £20 (£10 win + £10 place)
- Place terms: 1/4 odds for top 3 positions
If it wins: Win part pays £100 + Place part pays £25 = £125 profit
If it places 2nd/3rd: Only place part pays £25 profit
Common Each Way Terms
- Horse Racing: Usually 1/4 odds for top 3 (or top 4 in big handicaps)
- Golf: Typically 1/4 odds for top 5 or top 10 positions
- Other Sports: Varies by bookmaker and event
